Late fall and winter are some of the best times to kayak around Tromsø. The water remains crystal clear, the air crisp and refreshing, and the early afternoon sunsets are simply breathtaking. As fall transitions to winter, the vibrant colors of the season give way to snow-covered landscapes, offering a stunning Arctic backdrop.
During the darkest months, from mid-November to late January, we embrace the magic of the polar nights, with stars visible all day. Surprisingly, kayaking in the Arctic winter is warmer than you'd expect! We gear up in drysuits to stay warm as we paddle through snowy sounds, islands, and archipelagos. Despite the cold, wildlife thrives here, both above and below the water. Watch for common eiders, white-tailed sea eagles, playful otters, and curious seals that often swim alongside us.
Halfway through the tour, we’ll stop on a scenic beach to explore, warm up with snacks and hot drinks before heading back to the activity center. This tour runs every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday throughout winter when booked from Tromsø city center, or on Tuesdays and Fridays if booked with a transfer from Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.
In winter, we typically paddle out from Kaldfjorden/Eidkjosen, as it offers more stable conditions, but we may head to Sommarøy depending on weather. Transfers are provided from both Tromsø city (30 minutes) and Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (40 minutes), or you can meet us directly at the paddle location if you have your own car.
This guided tour is beginner-friendly, and no prior experience is required. Our certified local guides will provide a safety briefing and introduction to winter kayaking. We use double kayaks for stability, though singles are available upon request with proof of experience. Locations are chosen based on weather and sea conditions to ensure safety.
Please note that the tour is weather-dependent and may need to be rescheduled or canceled for safety reasons. Full refunds are given if you cannot join a rescheduled tour.
This tour is also ideal for groups and can be customized upon request. Contact us for more details.
