How to dress for your Arctic winter adventure

Preparing for the Arctic Tromsø weather can be tricky. Here are our tips for you to stay warm and safe with essential clothing and gear.

Dressing for winter in Tromsø, requires careful consideration due to the subarctic climate. Here's a short guide on how to dress for the Tromsø winter:

  1. Layering: Start with a base layer of thermal underwear to keep your body warm. Layer with insulating clothing like woolen sweaters, fleece, or down jackets. Finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against the cold and snow.

  2. Winter coat and pants: Invest in a warm winter coat and pant that's both insulated and waterproof. Look for a hooded option to shield your face from wind and snow.

  3. Headgear: Wear a warm, insulating hat that covers your ears to prevent heat loss. Consider a balaclava or neck gaiter for added face/neck protection.

  4. Gloves: Insulated, waterproof gloves are a must to keep your hands warm and dry. Consider liner gloves for extra warmth.

  5. Footwear: Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction are essential to keep your feet warm and stable in snowy and icy conditions. Winter boots are preferably a bit bigger than your normal size, so you have space for extra/thicker socks or foot warmers.

  6. Socks: Warm socks will help keep your feet warm and comfortable, and Norwegians prefer woolen socks. If you have extra space in your shoes a pair of thinner woolen socks can give extra insulation.

  7. Scarf: A warm, insulating scarf can protect your neck and face from the cold and wind.

  8. Thermal underwear: Consider wearing thermal leggings and long-sleeved tops underneath your clothing for added warmth. And again, close to the body woolen underwear is a favourite in Norway.

  9. Hand and foot warmers: Keep disposable hand and foot warmers on hand for additional comfort during extreme cold.

  10. Spikes/crampons: Winter in Tromsø also means snowy and icy roads and sidewalks. We recommend spikes/crampons to aviod falling.

Tromsø's winter weather can be quite variable, so be prepared to adapt your clothing based on daily temperatures and activities. Staying dry is crucial to avoid the cold, so make sure your outer layers are both waterproof and windproof. With the right gear, you can embrace the beauty of Tromsø's winter wonderland while staying warm and comfortable.
